Steam Distilation

Steam distillation is commonly used to purify organic compounds that distilate vapor (volatile), no mixture with water, has a high vapor pressure at 100 degrees C and contain impurities that are not essential (nonvolatile).

Steam distillation can be considered to sum up powder sample, which contain components that have a high boiling point at normal air pressure. In the usual warming will likely damage the active substance. To prevent that the purification is done by steam distillation.

With the presence of water vapor that enters, her womb uapzat equilibrium pressure was reduced to equal the pressure within a system, so the product will terdestilasi and carried away by flowing water vapor.

Steam distillation was also a mass transfer process that moves a little market to the mass media. Saturated steam will moisten the surface of the material, softens and penetrates into the tissue through cell walls, and the active substance will move into the active cavity of water vapor and then will move into the cavity vapor moving through the inter-phase. This process is called hydrofution.

Steam distillation is also a process of mass transfer to a medium that moves.

o How to purification by steam distillation
1. Extract fluid inserted into the vessel through a funnel.
2. Clove powder inserted in a cloth bag inserted into the extractor. In this vessel inside the vessel entered with holes and made of stainless steel materials.
3. The vessel is heated. Heating can be done by heating a large fire directly on the pumpkin.
4. Upon opening the tap, and tap the other closed.
5. Steam fluid will flow through the pipe, and then condensed by cooling. The liquid will flow into the extractor and akam soaking the cloves.
6. After the liquid is as high as glass estimator, faucet (below) is opened, so that the results flowing penyarian kebejana. When the results penyarian has flowed, all taps closed.
7. The liquid will evaporate while clove active substance left in the vessel.
8. This work is repeated until the cloves tersari perfectly.
